Hate Crime and the Deaf

This is actually quite fascinating!

Carl Schroeder is an American Sign Language Studies professor at Western Oregon University. He's also the president of the Oregon Association of the Deaf (OAD). He gave a lecture in Portland about "Hate Crime and the Deaf."

"Key to understanding Schroeder’s mission is a rejection of audism—a term he defines as “the belief that the ability to hear and speak is better than being Deaf”—and the belief that ASL is in any way less of a language than spoken languages."

  1. It is under the discrimination law, so that is exactly what it is. Why there are constant attempts to make discrimination against deaf a 'special' type of discrimination is totally pointless and a diversion, discrimination IS. It's as if some are suggesting hate crime against deaf is worse than hate crime against anyother minority sector. Basically another attempt by deaf purists to invent more obscure words for terms and issues that already exist. Address what is happening not waste time iventing new words for it !

  2. to MM:

I have experienced the stinky attitudes from some hearing people. I do not feel comfortable among them. They do not include me to anything. Does this tell a lot? Thank you.
