A grant of $225,00 to do research upon Deafhood

A grant of nearly £140,000 ($225,000 US dollars) by the Leverhulme Trust has been awarded to the University of Bristol’s Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) in United Kingdom to conduct research upon the new concept of "Deafhood." It will examine the Deaf people's concerns upon the advancement of Genetic technology.

I am quite curious to see what CDS will come up with. This is an exciting century for all of us. Technology and Medicine are starting to merge into a new field of science and it will eventually transform the way we live. It won't be long before we can actually FIX genetic defects....

Now the question is :
Should the Deaf communities across the world embrace the new changes or fear it?

Some definitions you may need to know: before you can read and understand the article.
  • Deafhood => the identify of being d/Deaf culturally than just a person with hearing loss.
  • Hegemonic / hegemony => the dominance or leadership of one social group or nation over others;
    • In this example : Medical deaf vs Cultural Deaf (or Hearing vs Deaf)
  • Eugenicist / eugenics => the study and practice of selective breeding applied to humans, with the aim of improving the species.
    • "Survival of Fittest" where we pick "perfect" human beings to make the best, strongest, smartest babies.

  1. This is a logical next step in the study of social theories regarding Deaf people.

Deafhood, one of the first detailed social theories, now stands to be studied and tested.

I hope this £140,000 research suggests more social theories and that we see more clearly the valuable things Deaf people can teach the world.

  2. "Deafhood => the identify of being Deaf culturally than just a person with hearing loss."

Ummm, have you really read Paddy Ladd's book?

He describes deafhood as a journey of discovering and discussing what it means to be deaf, whether one is culturally Deaf, or deaf and wears a hearing aid or a C.I., etc. There are many ways to be d/Deaf.

??????? now you understand why confuse us.
You see Ella taught us that deafhood applies to any d/Deaf person who can't hear like d/Deaf, oral, HH, CI, ASL user. Now you say deafhood limits to culturally Deaf. Now you and Ella try to confuse me. Ella said oralists are champs. Why change all time to confuse us.

  4. Deafhood, why being "Deaf" makes you special, and why being "deaf" doesn't. Surprised to see funds being given to the CDS given it is due to be shut down at Bristol, throwing good money after bad ?

  5. It is not my intention to confuse anyone. I have updated the definition with a more generic definition that should satisfy everyone.

I'm currently more interested in the question, "Should the Deaf communities across the world embrace the new (genetic) changes or fear it?"

I'm looking forward to hear from you.

    Thanks

  6. LOL

Definition of deafhood keeps getting changed just to suit whatever purposes.

I had to laugh at this one.

  7. Drew, whether you support genetics or not, it is here, every country in the world is pursuing it, when choice comes, i.e. REAL choice, then we will know. The issue is WHAT do you decide when the choices come in real time ? hypothetically opposing the choice or even genetics is pointless. The UK (Including near BRISTOL where the funds are going), are leading UK genetic research areas, indeed the UK is a world leader in genetic research. Why would late deafened FEAR having their norm ? they are deaf too. When cultural deaf hard core GET a choice (At present they are trying to stop research which is downright silly, no-one is claiming any sort of cure), time then to put up. Why are they funding research into hypothetical opinion ? and, opinion as yet NOT identified with the deaf majority ? and using 'Deafhood' an concept bitterly opposed in many areas as some pointer ? there seems some 'blanket' assumption ALL cultural born deaf are against a genetic cure, we will see.... my money is still pro genetics, because HEARING parents will make the decision, it's NOT going to be a deaf culture choice. I've just saved that charity £140K..... this panders to a cult in the deaf world, I'm not sure we should be supporting that...
